I believe this means that even through you lost the big game and lose the championship it is more honorable.  then you cheating to win. i rather lose knowing i try. than wining by cheating. It is better to win with honor. this makes you look like a better person. i rather fail a test knowing i didn't cheat rather than get a passing grade by cheating. because in life it will come back to me and will hunt my down with dishonor. It is always better to win by playing by the rules it makes the game more fun. rather than win with a bunch of cheating moves and plays. things like this will be with you the rest of your'e life.
